Yes! I have entered into a Service Agreement with an experienced, industry-savvy editor. As I write, that consultant is reading my work with an eye and ear to structure, organization, clarity of content, and transitions; style, tone, and voice; and plot, character development, dialogue, setting, pace, and reader engagement. I am tingling with excitement over this and specifically over the phone conference we will have in the next few days, midway. This step on the long road to publication (that’s the hope) is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
Being edited comes to me as affirmation of my novel even though I am paying the quite ample going rate for this service. I don’t think editors accept jobs only for the money without regard for quality. True professionals are selective, so I find the mere acceptance of my project encouraging. In addition, my editor said this: “I like your writing style. It has a consistent voice, wonderful diversity in structure and use of language and is unique to you. In other words it is not stilted or ordinary and has a unique style. The end of the [first]chapter grabs the reader’s attention and takes him or her right to the next chapter without stopping.” Wow. Cool. Thanks.
The next step will be, once again, revision. As I’ve mentioned before, my metaphor for revising is having fun with a playful kitten, and I should be able to handle that okay during this vagabond summer I’m leading before returning to Jubilee mid-August. After that, the pitch to agents will begin.
In that regard, I could use a little help from y’all, namely to go on Amazon or Goodreads and write a positive comment or brief review about Sunday by Sunday. Agents considering new clients often check those sites to see if the author has a following. Naturally, positive reviews make an impression and become a positive factor in the decision-making process.
Next week, I’ll be sending a message to my email subscriber list with details about posting reviews. If you’re not on that list for periodic updates, please subscribe here, at the Connect page at cristyfossum.com . And thanks so much for your interest and encouragement as I travel this road.
How about y’all? Anyone else on this journey of trying to get a book published? Any anecdotes, suggestions or questions that might be helpful to me and others?
